NSWICC CEO Deb Barwick recently attended the NSW Aboriginal Business Round Table at Bangarra Dance Theatre, contributing to an important and forward-looking discussion on the growth and sustainability of Aboriginal businesses across New South Wales.

The Round Table brought together representatives from the NSW Aboriginal Business Taskforce, government, industry and Aboriginal business leaders to help inform the development of the inaugural NSW Aboriginal Business Strategy. The session provided a valuable platform for collaboration, knowledge-sharing and the advancement of practical solutions to strengthen Aboriginal economic participation.

NSWICC acknowledges the leadership of Aboriginal Affairs NSW in facilitating this important dialogue and for their continued commitment to working alongside Aboriginal businesses and representative bodies to drive meaningful outcomes.

During the Round Table, Deb highlighted the Buying on Country – Equitable Procurement Practices Digital Training Program, a key initiative supporting the implementation of the NSW Government’s Aboriginal Procurement Policy (APP). The program equips government staff with practical tools to identify and engage certified Aboriginal businesses across NSW, while also addressing risks such as black cladding through increased awareness and education.

Deb also shared insights into NSWICC’s recently launched digital platforms designed to strengthen connection and access to resources across the state:

  • Aboriginal Women in Business Portal
  • Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCO) Portal
  • Aboriginal Entrepreneur and Business Portal

These platforms aim to support collaboration, improve visibility and provide practical tools for Aboriginal businesses and organisations at every stage of their journey.

A key focus of NSWICC’s ongoing advocacy remains increasing supply opportunities with local government. Building on successful engagement with councils such as Byron Shire, NSWICC continues to work towards expanding regional participation, supporting local jobs and driving long-term economic prosperity for Aboriginal communities.

The Round Table reinforced the importance of Aboriginal-led solutions in shaping policy and ensuring that strategies translate into real, measurable outcomes for communities across NSW.

When Aboriginal businesses succeed, communities thrive — and initiatives like this are critical in building a stronger, more connected and prosperous future.
